An introduction to Doshas
The 5,000-year-old science of Ayurveda believes wellness comes from the balanced integration of the mind, body, spirit, & environment.
Together, these four aspects create a holistic sense of well-being.
To realize our highest potential Ayurveda teaches us to expand our focus to consider the whole.
Doshas are a central concept in Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, that describe three categories of substances that are believed to exist in the body and mind:
Vata: Associated with cell division, movement, excretion, and cognition
Pitta: Associated with metabolism, thermo-regulation, energy homeostasis, pigmentation, vision, and attentional processes
Kapha: Associated with anabolism, growth, storage, and stability
Ayurveda teaches that a person's dosha is determined by their unique ratio of the five elements of the world: air, earth, space, water, and fire.
Doshas are believed to be responsible for a person's health, and personality and to influence various functions, including sleep.
